"The most precious resource for businesspeople is not their time. It's their energy. Manage it well". Robin Sharma
An interesting question, how do we re-energise ourselves in relation to the fast paced world we live in? The fact is we are not designed to run like pc’s running multiple programmes all at once, having said that, we are expected to meet the demands of a fast paced ever changing world.
Over 100 global studies in the last decade consistently show that only around 20% of people are truly engaged at work. In order to change this trend we must change our thinking about energy and high performance. Energy is the capacity to do work. I suggest being aware of your 4 energy vessels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual and using them to our advantage by taking care of ourselves. Quite simply, it is about personal energy management. The more you take care of yourself, the more value you can add to yourself and the world. If you manage your energy skilfully you will increase your productivity at work . This information is to avoid defaulting into survival zone, paying attention to your 4 energy vessels and moving into the performance zone.
If we are expected to meet greater demand, we must devise a new way to do it;
- Awareness of 4 energy vessels – physical: sleep, rest, fitness and nutrition; emotional: feelings; mental: intellectual purpose; spiritual: higher meaning and purpose connected to passion (values & beliefs)
- Guiding people to build capacities in concrete, systematic ways
How can this be done? Put the intention into action, by creating a daily ritual(s); for example, take time to eat and enjoy your lunch; ensure you sleep 8 hours per night; take a rest by listening to a song or two on your iPod, go for a 10 minute walk, read or practise being mindful.
Earlier this year, I listened to leading energy expert share his passion for managing our energy, not our time. He used a profound metaphor that I’ve integrated into my daily ritual which encourages all of us to engage a Sprinter mentality as opposed to Marathoner mentality. Sprinters are pulsars, they push then recover, they work hard then renew. It allows us to make our performance better and enjoy more. Sprinters look down the track and see the finish line; they push down the track, reach the finish line, and then chill.
In a practical sense, pay attention to yourself, your 4 vessels of energy; I suggest paying particularly close attention to your physical vessel – sleep 8 hours per night, eat properly, move your body and practise being aware of your breath.
