Taking the Next Step in your Career: Self-Belief

    Share

In the context of career transition and every other life experience, believing in yourself is the common denominator.  I knew I had to believe in myself in order to succeed at the following challenges. I love being outdoors and I enjoy being physically active.  Here are 2 experiences that demonstrate the requirement of self-belief in all that we do. By engaging in these experiences, I worked out a method to my goal and in effect, built added self-confidence and esteem.

    1. Millennium 2000 Cycle Challenge – Kootenay Pass, Selkirk Mountains, Canada   I took on this challenge in June 2000; We were a team of 8 embarking on a cycle ride to Kootenay Pass summit to raise awareness and funding for a children’s charity; It was a gruelling ride, surrounded by a visually stimulating masterpiece of mother nature at her finest and we rose to the challenge, we did it!  We worked collectively as a team and individually and found success.
    2. Round the Isle Race – Isle of Wight, UK   I took on this challenge in June 2005.  I was invited to participate in the sailing race with a team of 6.  I felt excited and a little apprehensive at the beginning, but I accepted the invitation with an overarching feeling of, Yes, I can, I can do it and I want to do it.  Prior to the race, I imagined feelings of achievement, joy and inspiring learning experiences.  Eleven hours after the race started those initial feelings of triumph, joy and excitement came true.  We did it!

Key question to ask: How to believe in yourself?

I refer to experience, pearls of wisdom, learning from myself and others and ongoing daily personal growth. The foregoing challenges were embraced with an underlying structure; firstly, there was a defined purpose, secondly, there was a desired outcome and thirdly, I evaluated my role in each experience and how I would be in the moment; essentially, being present and mindful, even when the going got tough.  I knew I could do it and I wanted to do it.  I knew I had the energy, stamina, desire and inner belief that were required in order to accomplish both challenges.

Interestingly, I knew I would learn an immense amount about myself and supporting others and that thought invigorated me. The golden threads of key learning from these experiences and others continually benefit me through-out my life, particularly in relation to my career. I use my self-belief vessel on a regular basis.
