    Dream Job: Is it Just That or Can it be a Reality?

    For most of us, work is part of our day to day lives. According to the Office of National Statistics 29.19 million of us are employed and with the UK Governments recent announcement of introducing a new “Happiness Index” it’s more important than ever we are in a career that we enjoy.  

    How often do you find yourself saying “I’m bored”, “I just fell into it” or “It pays the bills”. What would it feel like to wake up in the morning and feel excited about going to work? Staggeringly, when researching, the results are pretty shocking. Although there haven’t been many recent studies one suggests that as many as 4 out of 5 people are unhappy in their jobs and that it wasn’t salary or the love for the work that made them happy. Instead friendly, supportive colleagues and a good manager are the primary causes of happiness at work.

    So how do you keep positive and motivated and ultimately experience job satisfaction. The only person who is in control of your future career is you – here are some tips on how you can get clear on what you really want.

    • Do you know your values? And are these reflected in your current role?
    • Define your skills and capabilities, and think about how you are utilising them. Are there are any which are not being used and thus you find yourself feeling frustrated.
    • Challenge yourself. Staying stagnant is the quickest and easiest route to boredom.
    • Network. Think about people who could help you. Have you been longing for a career in marketing? Who do you know that works in this industry and can potentially introduce you?
    • Don’t be shy about having ambition. Employers and prospective employers want to have people working for them who demonstrate an appetite for personal growth.
    • Go for it. You and only you can make it happen.

    Employers have a duty to capitalise on feelings of happiness and optimism amongst their workforce, so ensure you have a voice to suggest any improvements.
