How Career Coaching Helped a Woman Become Pepsi Boss

    INDRA

Indra Nooyi is chief executive of PepsiCo—one of the world’s largest food and beverage companies and the organisation behind famous brands such as Pepsi, Quaker and Lipton.

Indra is a Chennai native who in the 1970s obtained the equivalent of an MBA degree in Calcutta before launching her career and eventually moving to the USA. She was included in the Wall Street Journal 50 Women to Watch list in both 2007 and 2008. She was also named in Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in the same two years. In both 2009 and 2010, Fortune ranked her as the most powerful woman in business and in October 2010, Forbes named her the 6th most powerful woman in the world. Her presence is even felt in pop culture, earning her a shout-out in the globally popular US television show Gossip Girl.

How did this remarkable woman make it to the very top of the male-dominated corporate world? There is, of course, no one single answer to this question, but Indra herself states that her success is partially down to the good career guidance she has received in her life. Coaching and Mentoring by Jane Renton quotes the Yale graduate as saying, “I am a product of great mentors, great coaching”.

Her experiences with coaching inspired Indra to develop the ‘Performance with Purpose Programme’ that is transforming the way PepsiCo operates. The programme is based on the concept that performance cannot be of an optimal level if it is rooted in short-termism and doesn’t have a purpose.
