Age Discrimination Claims Are Rising

The number of age discrimination claims is rising according to The Age and Employment Network (TAEN). The Tribunal Service's Annual Statistics for 2010/2011 show a real 'dramatic' increase in the number of age discrimination related claims lodged. There was a 31% increase up to 6800 age discrimination claims between March 2011 and the previous year, and a general increase of 79% from 2008-09.

Only a small percentage of these claims end up getting to an actual hearing but it is flagging up the need for employers to become much more 'age-aware' as Chris Ball, Chief Executive of TAEN states. He says...

"Against a backdrop of a number of high-profile ageism cases, the ending of the default retirement age and rising levels of redundancy and unemployment, many more people believe that they are being discriminated against. These figures relate only to claims and the majority will not succeed in tribunal, but the sheer numbers suggest that they can't all be wrong."

"Employers must have appropriate policies in place to deal with issues like redundancies, recruitment and pay. In all of these areas, age should be completely out of the equation."

People are feeling discriminated against and more and more people are willing to take these issues to court so unless organisations take this issue more seriously, they may end up spending more time, money and energy battling these scarred individuals who will ultimately end up damaging the company's brand.
